The spiritual heart of Bulgaria and one of the most visited sites in Southeast Europe. Founded in the 10th century by Saint Ivan Rilski, the monastery sits at 1,147 m altitude deep in the Rila Mountains. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983 — its striking frescoed walls and centuries-old tower are unlike anything else in Bulgaria.

Seven glacial lakes arranged like a necklace across the slopes of Rila Mountain between 2,100 and 2,500 metres. On a clear day the reflections of the sky and peaks in their crystal waters create a scene of impossible beauty. Take the gondola from Panichishte and follow the easy trail up. One of the most iconic natural wonders in the entire Balkan Peninsula.

A hidden royal treasure in the pine forests just above Borovets. Built between 1898 and 1914 as the personal hunting lodge of Tsar Ferdinand I and his son Tsar Boris III. Stroll through beautifully kept grounds, admire cascading waterfalls and historic buildings. Still owned by the Bulgarian royal family today.

Bulgaria's oldest mountain resort, established in 1896 at 1,350 m on the northern slopes of Rila. With 58 km of marked ski runs and lifts reaching 2,560 m, Borovets delivers world-class skiing at a fraction of Alpine prices. In summer it transforms into a paradise for hikers and mountain bikers, and is the starting point for the ascent of Musala Peak.

At 2,925 metres, Musala is the highest peak in Bulgaria and the entire Balkan Peninsula. On a clear day the views stretch across half of Bulgaria. Take the gondola from Borovets to cut 600 metres of elevation, then follow the well-marked trail to the summit — approximately 3 hours from the gondola. Standing on top is an experience that stays with you.

One of Bulgaria's best-kept secrets — a medieval fortress complex on Sveti Spas hill in Belchin village. Tzari Mali Grad, meaning "The Little King's City," is an archaeological complex with roots stretching back to ancient Thrace and Rome. Walk the ruins, take in sweeping mountain views and feel the weight of centuries underfoot.

The largest dam in Bulgaria sits high in the Rila Mountains, offering a completely different kind of natural beauty — wide open water framed by forested slopes, fresh mountain air and total tranquility. Perfect for fishing, lakeside walks and picnics. The route from Pchelin passes through some of the most beautiful mountain scenery in the region.

A protected natural landmark since 1974 — nearly 10 metres tall on the Chavcha River, most spectacular in spring and frozen in winter. Ivan Vazov spent the summer of 1917 here and dedicated two poems to it. From the free parking area it is less than 5 minutes on foot. Suitable for all ages including small children.

A well-kept secret even among Bulgarians — dropping approximately 20 metres through a rocky gorge in Eastern Rila. Start from mountain hut Gurgulitsa, follow the red trail through shaded forest for about 30 minutes. Benches along the way to rest. A raw, wild beauty that makes you feel like you genuinely discovered something.

An officially protected natural landmark — 102 metres of ancient limestone passages at 675 m altitude, believed to be a former Roman-era iron mine. Home to six protected bat species and one of the largest bat colonies in the region. First mapped in 1924. A genuinely unique off-the-beaten-path experience that most tourists never discover.

The highest embankment dam on the entire Balkan Peninsula — at 1,923 metres above sea level in the heart of Rila. The drive up alone is an adventure through mountain forest. At the top, a vast blue reservoir surrounded by Rila peaks creates raw alpine grandeur. Fishing permitted. The Skalovitets Waterfall is just 8 km away — perfect pairing for a full day trip.
